Agave syrup has been touted as a “natural” product making people think that it’s a healthy sugar. Agave comes from the sap of the agave plant, which was used many, many, many years ago, but what they used years ago is not what is now sold in plastic bottles at your local grocery store. Agave is produced in a fashion almost identical to the processing of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Agave even contains more fructose than HFCS. Because it is low-glycemic it’s recommended to diabetics, but it actually reduces your metabolism and increases your insulin resistance which causes your insulin levels to remain elevated. Agave also puts you at risk for weight gain, especially belly fat. Your risk of liver damage also increases as well as higher triglycerides.
Raw Honey contains trace amounts of vitamins & minerals and does not raise blood sugar as fast. It’s also anti-microbial, heart-healthy and has anti-inflammatory effects. Honey is excellent to soothe a cough (better than over-the-counter cough syrups). It’s has a lower glycemic level a little less than a banana. Raw honey can soothe and heal skin wounds, helps with pollen allergies, aids sleep, & blocks free radicals. Honey is perfect before a workout as it provides a ready supply of energy. Switching to honey may even aid in weight loss compared to diets that contain high amounts of sugar and HFCS.
Winner is RAW HONEY! If you can find local raw honey that’s even better for you.
Health advocates like Dr. Weil and even Dr. Oz have stated that they used to believe Agave was better for us, but have recanted those statements after much research was done.
When new products come on the market it’s always wise to do as much research as you can before jumping feet first on the band wagon.
I hope this helped clear up any confusion you might have over these two products.
